Why is there sand at the beach?

Rocks, Sand and Erosion

Work of Water Mystery 2 asks why you find sand at the beach.
Here is what you discovered:

Avery J.
Elijah

You learned that the large rocks at the top of a mountain break off because of weather or animals and fall down the mountain.  While they fall they break into smaller pieces then they land in the river.  As they flow down the river they are bashed against other rocks and get smaller and smaller until they arrive on the shore as sand, tiny pieces of broken rock.

This is why sand can be different colors.  It comes from the rocks that are nearby.
